Djely Tapa

Djely Tapa

Soutoungoumba Diarra, aka Djely Tapa, originally moved from Mali to Canada to study aeronautics. It soon became clear to her, however, that she could not escape the family tradition of making music she had picked up during childhood.  more

Current events

Her father, Djely Bouya Diarra, was a legendary singer and dancer, while her mother, best known for her first album Les Amazones d’Afrique, is the equally legendary Kandia Kouyaté. The vocalist Djely Tapa became a solo performer in 2017, and her debut album Barokan, which is rooted in tradition, yet explores new paths as well, was released in 2019. Its follow-up (Dankoroba – which she is now touring) landed in 2024. Guest starring Vieux Farka Touré, the album is more colourful and pulses along to electronic beats and dub elements without ever losing its West African character.
