The popularity of the guitar, which has been rising steadily since the rock'n'roll era of the 1950s, is unparalleled in history. That is why the potentials of this instrument deserve to be showcased outside the realms of pop or rock music. What better way to do it than inviting the great British guitarist, Sean Shibe to perform at the Rising Stars series, launched by the European Concert Hall Organisation with the aim of showcasing young talents.

Sean Shibe was born in Birmingham in 1992 to an English mother and Japanese father — hence the exotic-sounding surname. Shibe studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, then in Italy. He is considered one of the most versatile guitarists performing today. He is equally interested in classical, as well as contemporary pieces. Shibe is a regular performer at the most prestigious festivals and, despite his young age, has already won numerous awards. He released several albums and The Times described his performance as ”one of the most compelling and touching recitals for the instrument”. His versatility definitely comes across in his chosen pieces. His concert features Francis Poulenc, as well as two pieces by Federico Mompou, a 20th century Catalan composer relatively unknown in Hungary, while he also ventures into the realm of early music, with a selection of Scottish lute manuscripts and pieces by Couperin. He will perform Manuel de Falla's tribute to the spirit of Debussy, and of course there will be a contemporary premiere, a must at Rising Stars concerts, written by one of the most exciting composers of our time, the British composer Thomas Adès, whom Budapest audiences have already had the chance to see.
