Our offer
There is no point searching for a work entitled Vespro di Pasqua in the catalogue of Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643). What the curious music-lover will find, however, is his most significant sacred work, the Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers of the Blessed Virgin), one of the most beautiful and grandiose liturgical compositions ever written.
A century ago, the world first encountered this remarkable opus, a work that soon became one of the cornerstones of twentieth-century musical innovation. Premiered in 1926, the singspiel is a milestone in Hungarian music history: its composer, Zoltán Kodály, fulfilled his aspiration to elevate Hungarian folk song of ancient origin to the same status as classical music, by virtue of its equivalent values, placing it on the stage of the nation’s Opera House.
Müpa Budapest is realising a long-held vision by presenting a joint concert by one of the most exciting organists of our time, the Frenchman Olivier Latry, and one of Europe’s finest brass and percussion ensembles, phil Blech Wien (composed mainly of members of the Vienna Philharmonic).
