This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of György Ligeti, one of the most exciting composers of the 20th century, a constant seeker of new paths forward. Originally from Transylvania, he studied at Budapest's Liszt Academy and, after emigrating in 1956, produced his mature work in Western Europe.

The series promises weekend afternoons of music and storytelling in a cozy atmosphere. This season, we once again welcome families to our interactive concerts, and after the music and applause have died down, the young audience will be able to queue up for polka-dot mugs of hot cocoa.

Russian characters emerge at BFO’s concert from three composers who found writing music a hard task. Lyadov was hindered by his own laziness; of his few surviving works, the concert features his music depicting nature in a fairy-tale world. Because of their harsh sound, Lyadov excluded all brass instruments from his score. Written in the turbulent year of 1917, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto treats the solo violin as first among equals rather than a dominating virtuoso. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3 wasn’t an easy delivery either.

Bach 3. brandenburgi versenyében ugyan csak vonósok szerepelnek, de nem a megszokott négy- vagy ötszólamú felosztásban: a hegedűk, brácsák és csellók hármas csoportokba rendezve konfrontálódnak egymással, versengésüket egy nagybőgőből és csembalóból álló continuoszekció kíséri. Mozart utolsó hegedűversenyét – amely ma a legtöbb zenekari próbajátékon kötelező mű – mindössze 19 évesen írta.

At the concerts of the Discoveries series, we have grown accustomed to meeting young talents from both Hungary and abroad - along with the unfamiliar and rarely appearing musical treasures they perform on these evenings.

2020 was the year of Beethoven: on December 16, we celebrated the 250th anniversary of his birth. By performing his greatest work now, three years after his jubilee, we are making up for the performances of March 2020 and 2021, which were both cancelled due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
